is it expensive or costly to maintain a small garden?
hi everyone,i'm just curious... is it really expensive to start a small garden in your backyard? coz i have this perception that maintaining a beautiful garden will cost you so much and that this kind of 'hobby' is only for the 'can afford' people...
How long does it take to develope a "green thumb"
I really love to garden. My mother has always had a nice garden and dozens of house plants. It seems though that the "green thumb gene" skipped over my generation. As much as I enjoy it, as much as I try to learn about the plants I want to grow, I just really, really suck at it. Plants in my care usually dry up or rot within days of me touching them. Each year I plant a garden I do get a little better than the year before. I was able to grow this gorgeous sunflower in the picture last year- but this was the ONLY sunflower out of a dozen that I started that made it to a flower. I've also been successful with sage & cukes. Any thoughts on how long it takes to really master gardening when you don't seem to just 'have the touch'? btw- this year will be my 6th or 7th attempt!
Have you ever buy things online?
Some people like shopping online because it's convenient. Some people don't because they want to have a look and feel the things that they're going to buy before make the purchase. As for me, I have done online shopping for many times and no trouble so far. I bought from ebay a creative Jukebox mp3 player, plant seeds, bulbs and the fertilizers (I used to love gardening!), books, CDs and lots more. What's your opinion about shopping online?
Gardening... what?
I was randomly thinking about a bigger wider future plan for myself, and i suddenly realized something i never have before. Although i have done very little plant work and can just about mow my own lawn- i actually really enjoy gardening. So i was thinking if i train myself up a-bit, i might be quite good at it, or atleast enjoy it to the max.Does anyone know any good gardening books that i could get from the UK? or even any tips of just the basics about gardening:P? I mean, i know it sounds simple but, wheres the catch eh?
Time to plan the garden, so what are your plans for your garden this year?
Mine is to get some bugs that eat other bugs. Last year a lot of my garden got eaten alive. Do my greens indoors because the outdoor greens got eaten and something I read said to rotate my crops. Then get some bug and disease resistant crops. Also onions and garlic indoors as well as some herbs. Outdoors, it will depend on what I can find for bug and disease resistant crops. So have you gotten any gardening books yet? What are your plans? Our Cooperative Extention said that if I want Blue Berries, I should prepare this year to have them next year in order to change the soil enough and the colder the region, the lower to the ground they must be. I don't want the new tree ones anyway. Who can pick anything above 6 feet high. Our apple tree we shake. But I don't know if I want one inch plants and to crawl all over, esp. since we have sub-zero temps. So are you planning any new crops? Rotating any? Do you know the things that you have to watch out for in your area? Like we can't buy currents from most places because they carry a disease that kills pine trees, esp. white pine which is a very important crop here. But one current company is certified to be sold in my area because...
